Health Benefits

Pecans are a good source of calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which help lower blood pressure. Majority of the fat in pecans is a healthy type called monounsaturated fat. Eating monounsaturated fat instead of high saturated fats (like potato chips) can help lower levels of bad LDL cholesterol. Keeping your LDL cholesterol low cuts down your risk of having a stroke or heart attack. Cashews contain a high amount of iron and copper. Both of these are very important for the production of red blood cells. Cashews also contain high amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, both found to be beneficial to your heart health. Almonds are a fantastic source of antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect against oxidative stress, which can damage molecules in your cells and contribute to inflammation, aging and diseases like cancer.

Fun Facts

Pecans aren’t technically nuts, they are actually “drupes,” considered the fruit of a tree similar to peaches and plums. Pecans are related to walnuts. The United States consumers over 90% of the world’s cashew crop. The 'fruit' of the cashew nut is called the cashew apple. Almonds were one of the first foods awarded a qualified health claim in the US. Although most people think of the almond as a nut, it is actually a seed that can be found inside a drupe, the fruit of the almond tree. Almonds are actually in the rose family and are often called “the queen of the rose family.”

How to Store Nut Mixes

It is important to store nuts properly to protect them from becoming rancid. Store nuts in a tightly sealed container, in a cool dry place away from exposure to sunlight. Keeping nuts cold will further protect them from rancidity and prolong their freshness. For storage up to six months, store in the refrigerator and keep away from strong-smelling foods as nuts tend to take on the smell of things around them. Storing mixed nuts in an air-tight container is recommended for storing for longer periods. Do not store in direct sunlight or heat. Keep your mixed nuts in a dry, cool location under 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
