Health Benefits
Pecans are a good source of calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which help lower blood pressure. Majority of the fat in pecans is a healthy type called monounsaturated fat. Eating monounsaturated fat instead of high saturated fats (like potato chips) can help lower levels of bad LDL cholesterol. Keeping your LDL cholesterol low cuts down your risk of having a stroke or heart attack. Cashews contain a high amount of iron and copper. Both of these are very important for the production of red blood cells. Cashews also contain high amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, both found to be beneficial to your heart health. Almonds are a fantastic source of antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect against oxidative stress, which can damage molecules in your cells and contribute to inflammation, aging and diseases like cancer.
Fun Facts
Pecans aren’t technically nuts, they are actually “drupes,” considered the fruit of a tree similar to peaches and plums. Pecans are related to walnuts. Almonds are actually in the rose family and are often called “the queen of the rose family.”
How to Store and Select
For storage up to six months, store in the refrigerator and keep away from strong-smelling foods as nuts tend to take on the smell of things around them.
