Health Benefits
Papayas are rich in antioxidants. Research has shown they contain more beta-carotene than carrots and more vitamin C than kiwi fruit. These anti-oxidants protect against heart disease and arteriosclerosis by inhibiting oxidisation which is necessary for platelets of plaque to stick to the walls of blood vessels. Papaya is also a good source of soluble fibre which has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol whilst promoting the uptake of the desirable HDL cholesterol and at the same time inhibiting the development of gall stones. Papaya or papaw is native to the South Americas and was first farmed in Mexico. Fruit is dehydrated in an automatic process where the fruit is exposed to low temperature over a prolonged period. Temperatures are kept between 50ËšC and 60ËšC as this is the optimum temperature range for drying and retaining nutritional content.
Fun Facts
Papaya is also known as papaw in Australia and other parts of the world. However, in the United States, the pawpaw is a indigenous, mango-shaped fruit. Confusing. The papaya is botanically a berry. It may look like it grows from a tree, but the papaya is actually the fruit of an herb. And a tall one at that — the papaya tree can grow over 10 feet tall. The word papaya derives from the Carib word ababai. Did you know that papaya is a natural meat tenderizer? It contains papain, which breaks down tough meat fibers.
How to Store and Select
Dried fruit has less moisture than fresh fruit, so it doesn't spoil as quickly, but refrigeration can help it maintain its freshness longer. Keep it in the main compartment of your refrigerator for up to six months.
