One serving can provide a percentage of the daily recommended intake of vitamins and minerals, such as folate. Dried fruits in general is a good source for fiber and antioxidants like polyphenols which are associated with better digestive health.
Fun Facts
Trail Mix is a type of snack mix that was developed to be taken on hikes and other outdoor activities. Traditionally a trail mix is a hunger stilling snack mix that specifically combines dried fruits, nuts, seeds and at times chocolate. Native Americans have been eating trail mixes for thousands of years and originally included buffalo meat. Combining nuts, raisins and chocolates as a trail mix dates back to around 1910. In Australia and New Zealand they call trail mix “Scroggin”. August 31st is National Trail Mix Day.
How to Store and Select
Storing nuts correctly is important to ensure maximum freshness and taste. Whether you buy this heart-healthy snack in a 1-pound bag or in bulk they can become rancid rapidly if not stored properly. Heat exposure will cause the oils in nuts to go bad, resulting in rancid nuts. Store your nuts in the fridge or freezer (away from onions and other strong-smelling foods), this limits the exposure to light, oxygen and heat. Use containers with air-tight seals, a glass jar or plastic containers are a good option to maintain proper moisture levels. Label the products you store with dates so you know which ones to indulge in first. Make sure to let cold nuts warm up to room temperature before opening the bag. This prevents the nuts from absorbing excess moisture. If you are planning on eating and finishing the bag within a few days just storing them in an air-tight container will be sufficient.
