Health Benefits
Hazelnuts provide significant amounts of antioxidants. Hazelnuts’ high concentration of antioxidant compounds, vitamins and minerals could give them some anti-cancer properties. The vitamin K, magnesium, copper and phosphorus that are present in cashews all work together to build bones, maintain bone density and support overall bone health. Copper helps to keep bones strong, making them less prone to breakage or osteoporosis. Magnesium is essential to bone health, with some being used by the body to build bone structure, along with phosphorus and vitamin K helps to balance calcium, a key mineral in bone metabolism. Pecans are rich in magnesium which is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits. Studies have proved that increased magnesium intake reduces inflammatory indicators in the body, and also reduces inflammation in the arterial walls, thus reducing the risk of arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, and other inflammatory ailments.
Fun Facts
Almond growers rent bees for pollination and it's one of the most costly issues for growers. Almonds are members of the rose family and are sometimes called “the queen of the rose family.” Over 90% of the world's cashew crop is consumed in the United States. November 23rd is National Cashew Day. Unlike other nuts and seeds the cashew does not grow within the fruit but instead on the outside of it, hanging from the base of a crab apple, called a “cashew apple.” Hazelnut trees can produce until over 80 years of age. Texas adopted the pecan tree as its state tree in 1919. In fact, Texas Governor James Hogg liked pecan trees so much that he asked if a pecan tree could be planted at his gravesite when he died. Can you imagine a pecan skyscraper? It would take 11,624 pecans, stacked end to end, to reach the top of the Empire State Building in New York City. Pecan trees can live to be over 200 years old
How to Store and Select
Storing nuts correctly is important to ensure maximum freshness and taste. Whether you buy this heart-healthy snack in a 1-pound bag or in bulk they can become rancid rapidly if not stored properly. Heat exposure will cause the oils in nuts to go bad, resulting in rancid nuts. Store your nuts in the fridge or freezer (away from onions and other strong-smelling foods), this limits the exposure to light, oxygen and heat. Use containers with air-tight seals, a glass jar or plastic containers are a good option to maintain proper moisture levels. Label the products you store with dates so you know which ones to indulge in first. Make sure to let cold nuts warm up to room temperature before opening the bag. This prevents the nuts from absorbing excess moisture. If you are planning on eating and finishing the bag within a few days just storing them in an air-tight container will be sufficient.
