Halloween Fun Facts

* Candy corn was originally called chicken feed! That’s right, the most iconic Halloween Candy used to have a different name. Because corn was commonly used to feed chickens, the confection was called “Chicken Feed”. The box was even marked with a colorful rooster!

  • Stephen Clarke holds the record for the world’s fastest pumpkin carving time. He did a great job in under 24.03 seconds, beating his previous record of 54.72 seconds!
  • Black and orange, the colors everyone associates with Halloween, are more symbolic than you may think. Orange indicates the harvest of autumn, while black is a symbol of darkness and a reminder that the holiday once was a festival that celebrated the boundaries between life and death.
  • Pumpkins are technically a fruit, not a vegetable! Scientifically speaking, a pumpkin is a fruit because, basically, anything that originated from a flower is botanically a fruit.
  • The city of Des Moines holds a hilarious tradition called beggars’ night. The night before Halloween, young children will hit the streets for Beggars’ Night. It’s very similar to Halloween, except kids are expected to tell a joke, poem or perform a “trick” for a treat.
  • The City of Keene holds the record for The greatest Jack O’ Lantern display. They broke the Guiness World Record in 2913 by lighting 30.581 pumpkins! The city is still committed to their winning status, and has since broken their own record eight times.
  • Back in the day, women would play Halloween games to learn more about their future husbands. There was a time when the holiday was associated with courtship, with several popular activities revolving around the pursuit of love. One game involved removing the skin of an apple and tossing the peel over your shoulder. The peel would then indicate the first initial of the woman’s future suitor.
