What is the history of peanuts? 

Peanuts probably originated in Peru or Brazil in South America. 

They were discovered in Brazil by European explorers. During the Spanish exploration of the new world, peanuts were grown all the way up to Mexico. They were brought back from Spain by explorers, and from there they were spread to Asia and Africa by traders. Peanuts were first introduced to North America by Africans in the 1700s.

Peanuts were not grown as a commercial crop in the U.S. until the early 1800s. They were first grown in Virginia and used mostly for oil, food, and as a substitute for cocoa. Peanuts were viewed at this time as food for livestock and the poor and were considered difficult to grow and harvest.

Peanut production increased steadily in the first half of the nineteenth century. During the Civil War, Union soldiers discovered that they liked peanuts and took them home with them. Both armies relied on this protein-rich food source.

Peanuts gained popularity in the late 1800s when PT Barnum’s circus wagons traveled across the country and vendors called out “hot roasted peanuts!” to the crowds. 

Around 1900, labor-saving machines were invented for planting, cultivating, harvesting, and picking peanuts from the plants, as well as shelling and cleaning them. As a result of these significant mechanical aids, the demand for peanuts rapidly grew, especially for oil, roasted and salted nuts, peanut butter, and candy.

How do peanuts grow? 

In order to grow peanuts, you will have to use fresh, raw, uncooked peanuts still in their shells. Fill a large, four-inch-deep plastic bowl 2/3 full of moist potting soil. Place four peanuts on top of the soil, and then cover with one inch of soil. You will see sprouts within a few days.

Peanuts bloom over a period of several weeks (up to three months), so the pods mature at various times. One pod yields two to three peanuts. 

Peanuts are usually harvested in late summer/early fall when the foliage turns yellow. As peanuts mature, the color of the hull changes – from white or yellow to dark brown or black. Peanuts can be tested for maturity by scraping the middle of the pods with a sharp knife. Peanuts with dark brown to black hulls are ready for harvest.
