Health Benefits

Peanuts are an excellent source of plant-based protein, fiber, and many key vitamins and minerals. Dried fruit has similar amounts of nutrients as the fresh fruit, but it is condensed in a smaller package. One serving can provide a percentage of the daily recommended intake of vitamins and minerals, such as folate. Dried fruits in general is a good source for fiber and antioxidants like polyphenols which are associated with better digestive health. Almonds are a good source of fat-soluble vitamins, specifically vitamin E, which can act as an antioxidant. One serving of almonds contains ~50% of the daily requirement for vitamin E. Almonds are a nutritious fat source and excellent additions to your diet. They pack a pretty heavy micronutrient punch compared to other, more processed fat sources, and may help lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol.

Fun Facts

Trail Mix is a type of snack mix that was developed to be taken on hikes and other outdoor activities. Traditionally a trail mix is a hunger stilling snack mix that specifically combines dried fruits, nuts, seeds and at times chocolate. Native Americans have been eating trail mixes for thousands of years and originally included buffalo meat. Combining nuts, raisins and chocolates as a trail mix dates back to around 1910. In Australia and New Zealand they call trail mix “Scroggin”. August 31st is National Trail Mix Day.

How to Store Your Trail Mix

Do not refrigerate a trail mix that has chocolates inside. Chocolate absorbs other odors that can cause the chocolate to taste unpleasant. Moisture from the fridge can result in “sugar bloom” which means the sugar rises to the surface and discolors the chocolate. Although it has no effect on the flavor, it doesn’t look too appealing. Store your chocolates in a dry, cool place, preferably between 65 and 70 degree F. Seal your trail mix in an air-tight container and keep them away from sunlight or direct artificial light.
