Health Benefits

Walnuts have higher antioxidant activity than any other common nut. Walnuts are significantly higher in omega-3 fat than any other nut, providing 2.5 grams per 1-ounce (28-gram) serving. Inflammation is at the root of many diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, and can be caused by oxidative stress. Studies suggest that if your gut is rich in health-promoting bacteria and other microbes (your gut microbiota), you’re more likely to have a healthy gut and good overall health. Walnuts are calorie dense, but studies suggest that the energy absorbed from them is 21% lower than would be expected based on their nutrients

Fun Facts

English merchant marines transported the product for trade to ports around the world and they became known as “English Walnuts. The bark is smooth, olive-brown when young and silvery-grey on older branches, and features scattered broad fissures with a rougher texture. The United States is the second largest producer of walnuts, accounting for approximately one third of the total world production. California is the nation’s numberone walnut producer, accounting for nearly all walnuts produced in the U.S. The most walnuts crushed by the hand in one minute is 212

How to store

Storing nuts correctly is important to ensure maximum freshness and taste. Whether you buy this heart-healthy snack in a 1-pound bag or in bulk they can become rancid rapidly if not stored properly. Heat exposure will cause the oils in nuts to go bad, resulting in rancid nuts. Store your nuts in the fridge or freezer (away from onions and other strong-smelling foods), this limits the exposure to light, oxygen and heat. Use containers with air-tight seals, a glass jar or plastic containers are a good option to maintain proper moisture levels. Label the products you store with dates so you know which ones to indulge in first. Make sure to let cold nuts warm up to room temperature before opening the bag. This prevents the nuts from absorbing excess moisture. If you are planning on eating and finishing the bag within a few days just storing them in an air-tight container will be sufficient.
